The opportunity

RivMed has an exciting opportunity for a Children and Young Person Support (CYPS) Worker.  Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the successful applicant will work within a growing supportive and passionate team at Riverina Medical & Dental Aboriginal Corporation (RivMed) to ensure delivery of the highest quality, services and programs.  

The Role

RivMed is dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of children and young people, particularly those affected by domestic and family violence. Our work is aligned with the Safe and Strong Families in NSW strategy, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and the provision of comprehensive support to build safe, strong, and resilient families. We are committed to delivering trauma-informed, culturally sensitive services that empower children, young people, and their families.

The Children and Young Person Support (CYPS) Worker plays a vital role in supporting children and young people who are at risk of or have been affected by domestic and family violence. This role involves providing direct support, advocacy, and intervention services in line with the Safe and Strong Families in NSW strategy. The CYPS Worker will work collaboratively with families, community organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to supporting the safety and well-being of children and young people.

The key objectives of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct assessments to identify the needs, strengths, and risks of children and young people affected by domestic and family violence.
  • Develop and implement individualised support and safety plans in collaboration with clients and their families, ensuring plans are culturally appropriate and trauma-informed.
  • Provide one-on-one and group support sessions tailored to the specific needs of children and young people, focusing on emotional, social, and behavioural development.
  • Implement early intervention strategies to prevent domestic and family violence and mitigate its impact on children and young people.
  • Deliver educational programs and workshops that raise awareness of domestic and family violence, promote healthy relationships, and build resilience among children, young people, and their families.
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of children and young people, ensuring their voices are heard and their best interests are represented.
  • Liaise with external agencies, including child protection services, law enforcement, and legal services, to ensure a comprehensive response to domestic and family violence.
  • Offer rapid response to emergency referrals, providing timely and effective support to children and young people in need.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services, gathering feedback to continuously improve support offerings.

About you

To be successful in the role you will be able to demonstrate you meet the Selection Criteria below:

  • Aboriginality - This is an identified Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander position and candidates will be required to provide confirmation of Aboriginality with their application. (NB: applicants race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW)
  • Relevant qualifications in domestic violence, youth work, community services, or a related field.
  • Understanding of domestic and family violence dynamics and their impact on children and young people.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, young people, and their families.
  • Ability to conduct needs assessments, develop safety plans, and implement early intervention and prevention strategies.
  • Excellent problem-solving, crisis management, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures related to domestic and family violence.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care principles and their application in supporting children and young people.
  • Awareness of the cultural, social, and economic factors affecting children and young people, with a commitment to culturally sensitive practice.
  • Current Working With Children Check and National Police Check.
  • Valid Driver’s License and willingness to travel for work related purposes.
